Effects of droughts on hot spots in the province of Formosa, Argentina: An analysis with remote sensing tools

This research paper aims to evaluate the rainfall variability in the province of Formosa (Argentina) in order to analyze the spatiotemporal distribution of heat sources by analyzing satellite products. To this end, drought and humidity conditions were analyzed with the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPEI) for the period 1955-2022; then, MODIS products were obtained from January 2020 to February 2022. Later, the vector files were processed with ArcGIS software, using only those that had a confidence level higher than 80 %. Kernel density analysis was applied to recognize the most affected areas of the territory. The results showed that, in March 2020 began the most intense dry period of the last 73 years, with a duration of 24 months. During the year 2020, the highest number of heat sources occurred with a high level of confidence (> 80 %), decreasing considerably during the year 2021; then rising during the months of January and February 2022, a clear trend of fire outbreaks occurred in the central and eastern part of the provincial territory.
