The new agronomy in oil palm

Agronomy has been working on reducing and preventing any contribution to climate change. In a near future, Agronomists will have to propose measures and field practices to contribute to climate change remediation. Planting on degraded land, carbon sequestration improvement, development of more efficient planting material, soil management and quality, water conservation, development and maintenance of habitats to enhance biodiversity, are some of the priorities for the new Agronomy. All these changes will have to go along with an improvement of the productivity of the crop to ensure the economic viability of the plantations, also known as Ecological Intensification. These changes call for a shift in the mission of agriculture itself, where oil palms will no longer be the only product of the plantations. Other services will be obtained from the crop, to move forward towards multi?functional oil palm plantations.
