RSPO as New Standard in Market Access

Who is RSPO, Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil? What milestones have been achieved in 2011 and 2012? What is RSPO’S future in the coming years? These are key aspects to understand the functioning of this Roundtable. Three words can be used to describe how RSPO operates: a membership-based organization, where participation is voluntary and decision making is by consensus. Its objective is to seek balanced development for the industry that is legal and viable and contributes to sustainable development from an economic and environmental point of view and with social benefits. Nowadays, there is consensus among stakeholders as to how this industry should be developed and in which direction it should go. The RSPO initiative is based on defining in a comprehensive manner, good agricultural practices, fair treatment of workers and equitable treatment for communities, appropriate and correct acquisition of land, and environmental care. Among the milestones, it is highlighted that the RSPO brand nowadays is synonymous with responsibility and seriousness, and up to September 2012, close to 77 licenses have been issued, covering fourteen countries. In 2011, three years after the start of the process, more than one million hectares were certified representing five million tonnes of sustainable palm oil. Twelve percent of palm oil production is considered certified sustainable palm oil (CSPO). With the advances of the Roundtable and the idea that more and more producers and buyers around the world are interested in sustainable palm oil, the future of this industry is guaranteed.
