A Proposal for forming a small farming cooperative on Nevis to improve food security.

Since the late nineteenth (19th) century, Nevis has continued to struggle in the agriculture sector, despite few major modifications that have been done to greatly improve or enhance this sector. Over the years, farmers have encountered persistent problems on or off their farm land, which has made it difficult to be effective and efficient. The problems farmers encountered on the island of Nevis are animal attacks, praedial larceny, natural disasters, water shortage, competitions and lack of financial aid. Seventy-seven percent of the survey respondents agree that a food distribution problem exists on the island with the main cause of food distribution being food availability. The encouragement to expand local food production of different varieties of products would help reduce the island’s annual food bill by $150 million EC dollars by decreasing the importation activities on the island while providing opportunities for employment and income generation. To accomplish this, priority should be given to build greater relationships between the hotels and farmers. The purpose of this project is to recommend the formation of a small farmer’s cooperative on the island of Nevis so that farmers can work together in producing more crops thus increasing the local food availability. This also can help to promote sustainable agriculture and food security. Eighty percent of the survey participants responded favorably to forming a small farmers’ co-operative. Data and observation were collected by carrying out surveys in the island of Nevis, interviews with agriculturists from the Ministry of Agriculture in Nevis, and a farm visit to the Small Producers Association of Talamanca in Costa Rica (APPTA).
