Dominica. Significant Achievements 2023
In Dominica in 2023, significant progress was made in several projects promoted by different organizations. One of them, financed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), focused on strengthening the sea moss value chain. The Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) supported the training of producers and technicians in best practices for sea moss production, evaluated potential sites for commercial production and validated findings from the value chain analysis. Other notable achievements included conducting field training workshops, evaluation of sites for production, and validation workshops with stakeholders. In addition, a drying facility was constructed in Grand Bay to help producers dry sea moss. Another project, "Sustainable Land Management in Dominica," implemented by IICA in collaboration with several entities, focused on improving agricultural practices, market access and the adoption of sustainable land management technologies. Local extensionists and farmers strengthened their skills through workshops and practical demonstrations, established demonstration plots and installed sustainable management technologies on farms. IICA also facilitated access to credit and improved market access through the identification of priority value chains and market analysis. In addition, IICA collaborated with the International Trade Centre on a project to strengthen the capacities of coconut producers and processors in areas such as good agricultural practices, market opportunities and e-commerce. This included the identification of capacities, training in market opportunities and e-commerce, as well as the improvement of labels and product profiles for coconut processors. These projects reflect significant efforts to strengthen agriculture and farming communities in Dominica, improve agricultural practices and facilitate market access for local producers.
