Guyana. Significant Achievements 2023
In 2023, Guyana has made significant advances in its agricultural sector through key collaborations. Guyana's President, Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, has been recognized for his leadership in food security and sustainable development, establishing a partnership with the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) to create a Situation Room to support evidence-based decisions across the Caribbean region. In addition, it has been agreed to upgrade the Guyana School of Agriculture with a Center of Excellence and a demonstration farm to engage disadvantaged youth in the agricultural sector. The Secretary General of CARICOM, Dr. Carla Barnett, signed a General Technical Contribution Agreement with IICA to modernize and strengthen the sustainable development of the agricultural sector in the region by collaborating on educational, technological, innovation and food security projects. Another important project is the Engender Project, which seeks to integrate the gender perspective into the Guyana School of Agriculture, with the support of the UNDP and funding from the governments of Canada and the United Kingdom. Innovative projects have also been implemented, such as the acquisition of a prefabricated greenhouse to grow plants organically and raise tilapia fish, also financed by Canada and the United Kingdom. These initiatives seek to strengthen food security, technical training, and regional collaboration in the sector.
