The pine-apple production in Costa Rica is mostly affected by the American law on bio-terrorism and by the EurepGap norms derived from the European private sector. These evolutions imply changes in agricultural techniques, book keepings, additional production costs, and stricted commercial mechanisms. The pineapple small farmers face severe difficulties to implement the changes requested and one part could disappear. Large scale farmers are reinforced, small scale farmers are eliminated and the supply chains become shorter.
