Fatores de eficiência das culturas agricolas no Brasil : um comparaçao com os Estados Unidos e França nos casos de soja, milho e arroz

This article aims at evidencing efficiency factors for some Brazilian agricultural produces in comparison with those of competing countries. The analysis focused on the agricultural production of standard-sized properties representative of the countries. The crops chosen for the comparison were rice, soy and com, for two basic reasons: 1) they are important for Brazilian agriculture and for the country's economy, and 2) they face great commercial challenges in the international scope. The crops have conditioned the choice of the competing countries, the United States and France, for the comparative study. This choice of countries enriches this study because of their distinct political and economic contexts. In comparison with the other two countries, one the main factors of the Brazilian competitive ness emphasized by this study are the low cost of land and labor, two relatively abundant sources in Brazil. The low cost of both the mechanization and the depredations also contribute to the good performance of Brazilian produces. Nevertheless, the cost of inputs, and particularly of fertilizers and herbicides, is relatively important, together with the participation of financial costs in the total costs in Brazilian properties as compared to the other two countries. They are restraining factors in the Brazilian competitiveness.
