Criacao de Stenoma decora (Lepidoptera: Stenomidae) em condicoes de laboratório
In Brazil, the larva of Stemona decora Zeller is a regular pest of cacao in the municipality of Colatina, Espirito Santo and is sometimes a pest in the cocoa growin belt of southern Bahia. The larva feeds on the bark of the tree and rings of bark may be removed from small branches thereby causing their death. The pericarp of the fruit is also a common feeding site of the larva. A method was established of rearing continuous generations of S. decora in the insectary of Cacao Research Center in order that the toxicity of proprietary insecticides to the larva can be evaluated in the future. It is intended that the cultures will also serve for investigations on mass rearing of the insect parasites and predators of S. decora. Larvae were reared on a diet of which the main constituent is the epicarp of cacao pods. The other constituents added to the diet served mainly as preservatives. Data were obtained on the total time taken to complete the egg, larval and pupal phases of S. decora. The phenology of S. decora in the field is discussed in relation to the bionomical data obtained in the insectary
