Control can range through keeping plants in check to complete elimination and the goats agility and ability to eat brush weeds can be used to achieve control. New Zealand pastoral farming is subject to reversion to native and introduced brush weeds, and continuing research is defining the role of goats in weed control. Electrified fencing has now enabled farmers to control goats cheaply and to force them to the degree required for desired weed control level. This degree of control relates to species, preference, occurrence, stage of growth, time of year, stocking rate, age, breed and sex of goats. Management systems for using goats in conjuction with sheep and cattle that are being developed and refined with farmer experience are discussed. Income generation from goats and positive weed control are not compatible, but weed control alone can be a low cost, environmentally acceptable alternative to the more common burning, mechanical or chemical methods
