Chemical control of rice bacterial diseases in Korea

Bacterial leaf blight of rice in Korea was found in 1930 in the extreme south of Korean peninsula. The disease, however, was not known to the farmers until 1960s when a susceptible variety, kimmase, was cultivated as a recommended high yielding variety. The first trial on chemical control of the disease in Korea started in 1967, and the first release of chemicals for BLB control was in 1971. Before the release of phenazine farmers had been using bordeaux mixture, Dithan-stainless or some other fungicides which were used for control of other diseases at that time. For many years, Phenazine and Sankel have been used to control the disease but its effectivity could not reach up to 15 per cent. TF-130 once showed promising result in the experiments but has not been recommended for general use because of its toxicity. Two other chemicals, SF7402 and Oryzamate are presently under the testing program. Mixed chemicals, phenazine and zinc sulfate, showed higher control effect than other leading chemicals. For the control of kresek the mixed chemicals were especially effective when the seedlings were dipped into the solution before transplanting
