Evaluation of the inocuity and protection of an attenuated in vitro derived Babesia bovis y Babesia bigemina immunogen propagated in bovines

A study was carried out in order to reduce laboratory production time and costs of an attenuated B. bovis and B. bigemina immunogen. Splecnectomized and immunodepressed young bulls were used as multipliers and a large number of immunizing doses were obtained from these animals after inoculation with the original strains, obtained in vitro, at doses of 1x109 infected erythrocytes for each species of Babesia. After immunization of cattle with these parasite populations propagated in animals, it was seen that multiplication of Babesia spp in splenectomized and immunodepressed cattle did not affect the strains',,, inocuity but was able also to induce protection against challenges of previously evaluated virulent B. bovis and B. bigemina field isolates. Regardless of the immunization procedure, be it with parasites coming from in vitro culture or from parasites propagated in splenectomized cattle, all immunized animals were protected. Reduction in packed cell volume (PCV) was 22.8% and 15.6% respectively. In contrast, those animals belonging to the control group showed a 40.6% decrease in PCV and also, one animal of this group died of acute babesiosis. Thus, an attenuated in vitro culture derived immunogen, propagated in splenectomized and immunodepressed animals, could be used as an immunogen against babesiosis if it were necessary when a large number of animals were to be protected.
