Evaluation of Pleurotus ostreatus and Ganoderma lucidum (Agaricomicetes, Agaricales – Polyporales) using alternative substrates present from Paraguay

In order to cultivate Pleurotus ostreatus and Ganoderma lucidum strains, five ex- perimental substrates were tested and mixed in different proportions. Bean and chickpea seeds, oat grains and barley were used as inoculum, using oat grains as positive control of mycelium growth. Culture substrates were prepared in polypro- pylene bags with 1/2Kg and 1 kg of wet substrate of wood shavings, processed cane bagasse, leaves and oat grains in low proportion to enrich the substrate, using Cedrela fissilis shavings as positive control; the bags were sterilized for two hours at 120°c and 1 atm of pressure and then inoculated and incubated in the dark at 18/25°c of temperature and approximately 70% of ambient humidity, during 22-35 days. Once the substrate was covered with mycelium, induction was performed with 12 hrs of light and darkness, irrigation twice a day, constant temperature and humidity. After 30 to 35 days basidiomas were obtained. Biological efficiency (EB%) from induc- tion to harvest was evaluated. The substrate with the best results after the control (53,20% EB) was the mixture of shavings with oats and leaves (45,20% EB). Fruits were obtained in all substrates with the exception of sugarcane bagasse. The use of organic waste for mushroom cultivation can be an interesting alternative for recy- cling organic matter to generate crops on a small or large scale.
