Interdisciplinarity and intersectoriality as integrative approaches in the process of designing and formulating public policies

This paper puts forward a discussion regarding specific actions to be approached and that deal with how public policies are designed and formulated; additionally, it offers a couple of inter-articulated topics: interdisciplinarity and intersectoriality. Emphasis is made on the need to integrate aspects of public administration and meet organizational challenges that claim for active strategic management, sensitized to related issues, and committed to developing the required abilities to take on corresponding roles. An explanatory-descriptive, documentary research was conducted; main and specific documents were reviewed, as per Shong's (2007) three-stage, documentary research model; then, grouping given issues according to Pedráz's (2004) research criteria: primary, secondary, and tertiary data. Findings showed the following resulting categories: public policies and interdisciplinarity, conceptualizing intersectoriality in public policies, and integrative factors between interdisciplinarity and intersectoriality when drawing up public policies. This challenge entails willingness and ability to acknowledge the importance of intersectoriality on a daily-based practice, and that interdisciplinarity enriches professional approaches, enabling dialogue with other areas, overcoming isolation, socializing experiences, and sharing knowledge
