Milk production and quality and economic analysis of Holstein cows, supplemented with wild sunflower silage (Tithonia diversifolia) or maiz silage

The production and quality of the milk were evaluated, and an economic analysis was made by supplementing Holstein cows with corn silage (EMA) or wild sunflower silage (EBO). The milk production/cow/day without adjustment and adjusted to 4% of fat, the milk quality (% and kg/cow/d), the nutritional efficiency (EA), the energy efficiency and an economic analysis were evaluated. The information was analyzed with an oversample design, using a mixed model by the lmer library of the lme4 package of R. The cows supplemented with EBO and EMA had a similar consumption of dry matter, but milk production, kg of fat and protein/cow/day, EA, the production cost of milk liter and the difference sales-costs per cow/day were in favor of EBO, being a productive and economically viable alternative, in the supplementation of lactating cows in high tropics.
