Environmental conflicts of tourism in Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo, México

Tourism in the Mexican Caribbean is a success in macroeconomic terms, and its expansion is due to the need to continue accumulating capital. In the neoliberal era, the dispossession and commodification of territories have intensified to incorporate them into the valorisation circuit through tourism. Thus, Puerto Morelos was left at the mercy of capitalist interests and, nowadays, it arouses great interest because the construction of the “Tren Maya” train station is projected. In this context, the J. Zetina Gasca avenue, which crosses the municipality from north to south, has been expanded as part of the preparatory works. This research aims at analysing the conflict that arises in the community due to the dispute over urban spaces, taking political ecology as the theoretical framework. It is concluded that community resistance in Puerto Morelos is an example of a fight for territory re-appropriation against colonising tourism.
