Oasis de las flores, un jardín urbano para polinizadores

The production of 87 of the world's main food crops depends on pollinators (bees, butterflies, bumblebees, wasps, hummingbirds, bats, among others). However, these are in constant risk of decreasing their populations, which causes negative effects on ecosystems and agricultural and food production. Faced with this problem, in 2021 the Mexican government implemented the National Strategy for the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Pollinators (ENCUSP), in order to ensure the permanence of pollinator species and native plants in urban sites. This initiative involved the creation of gardens for pollinators, of which "Oasis de las flores" is a part and aims to serve as a feeding site and a center to encourage the propagation and cultivation of native plant species that preferably offer floral resources. for different types of pollinators. "Oasis of flowers" as a garden model (susceptible to be replicated in other contexts and urban scales), contributes to improving people's quality of life, offering spaces for rest, recreation, inspiration and even healing. This vegetable oasis offers food, water and shelter to pollinators, absorbs polluting particles from the air and produces oxygen, filters rainwater into the subsoil and reduces urban noise thanks to the vegetation that makes it up, houses a wide variety of native plants and increases the diversity of animal species. Therefore, on September 14, 2022, this garden received from the National Commission for the Knowledge and Use of Biodiversity (CONABIO), the Certificate as part of the Red Poliniza that is part of the ENCUSP and promotes the design and development of pollinator gardens in urban and suburban environments, on roadsides and crops, as well as regional pollinator gardens with native vegetation.
