Evaluation of the impact of potato monoculture on soil quality in the Páramo de Guerrero (Cundinamarca, Colombia)

Recently, the expansion of the agricultural frontier in the Páramo de Guerrero has transformed and altered this fragile and strategic ecosystem, affecting the provision of environmental goods and services, and leading to a detriment of soil quality. The present study evaluated the effect of potato monoculture (Solanum tuberosum L.) on soil quality in the Páramo de Guerrero. A total data set (CTD) of 14 edaphic variables in three agroecosystems was compared: (1) conventional potato monoculture (SC), (2) resting soil (SD), and (3) forest (BO). Subsequently, based on the CTD, a minimum data set (CMD) of 11 physicochemical and microbiological indicators was used in the soil quality index (ICS). The highest ICS values were obtained in BO (1.11) and SD (1.10) in comparison with SC (1.07). The results showed that agricultural practices in the Paramo have affected soil quality, mainly attributed to lower content of organic carbon (C), soil moisture and enzymatic activity (catalase) in the SC. Likewise, through the diagnostic guide in the field, alterations in physical indicators such as resistance to breakage, presence of hardened layers and decrease in infiltration speed were evidenced.
