Effect oflight reduction, surnmerpruning and nitro gen supply on the vegetative and generative growth of 'Golden Delicious' apples
In order to study the effect of a black mesh protection net (33% light reduction capacity) on the vegetative and reproductive growth of 'Golden Delicious' apple trees in Berlin (Germany), three different nitrogen levels and summer pruning at two different times were used. The results of shoots growth, trunk growth, shootlroot ratio, leafarea, early leaffall, numberofflowers perplant, flowers density per branch, fruit set and dry matter production are presented and discussed. In general, shade did not affect vegetative growth, but leaf area and fruit set. Winter pruning induced the greatest number of flowers per plant. Winter pruning along with surnmer pruning in June, increased fruit seto High levels of nitrogen increased number of flowers per plant and shoot growth, but reduced fruit set.
