Growth and development responses in gypsophila paniculata as related to cutting position on the stock plant and to low temperature treatments

Knowing the expansion that the non traditionals flowers sowing for exportation (Statice, Gerbera, Fresia, Gypsophila) has got in the last few years, this investigation was proposed in order to stablish the effects of cold storage and the localization of the cuttings on the mother plant, on some aspects of growing and development. For the experiment the cuttings were obtained from the medium, lower and upper thirds of the mother plant and with this material two tests were made; in the first one, rooted plants from the three layers were putted into a freezer at zero degrees for a 'perlod of one month and in the second one it was applied a cold treatment of two months. The results of each treatment were compared with a not treated testing plant. The evaluated variables were the plant length, the vegetative stem base diameter, the number of branches, the diameter of each floral branch and the floral branch weigth. At the end of the test it was seen that the one month freezing treatment does not affect significantly the rooted cuttings quality nor there subsecuently growing in winter cuarters. The frezzedplants growing rates, with one or two months treatments, were always bigger than that of the non storaged plants, indepently of there original localization on the motherplant. The one month cold storaqe had not effect on the plant heigth, but it did increase the vegetative stem diameter, specially on the plants obtained from the medium andlower third, moreover in this same groups the number of vegetatives branches got smaller; the more productive plants of the first test carne from the medium third zone and they had a month treatment. The results in the second test were not clear because the two months freezing effect, therewas a difference on the number of grown plants, this caused a not equal sowing dansitv, nevertheless, the cold treatment produced an anticipated fifteen days flowering.
