Estructura y riqueza florística del bosque seco tropical en la región Caribe y el Valle del río Magdalena, Colombia

I studied the structure, richness and floristic composition of seven tropical dry forest remnants in the dry Magdalena river valley and in the Caribbean region, Colombia. Sampling of 0.1 ha was undertaken following the methodology proposed by Gentry but considering all individuals with a DBH:2:1cm. A total of 308 species, 141 genera and 70 families was recorded and an average richness per locality of 78 species with DBH :2:1 cm per 0.1 ha. The average richness with a DBH :2:2.5 cm was 60 species, comparable to that found at other neotropical dry forests. Richness and structural data showed remarkable differences between relictual and secondary forest localities; there was a positive correlation between tree richness and structural traits associated with human activities in the foresto Los Colorados and Neguanje, located in the Caribbean region, were the sites with higher richness, basal area and canopy height. Fabaceae and Bignoniaceae were the most diverse families at all localities, while Capparis was the most diverse genus.
