Effect of the application on fungicides and of different cultural practices on bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) seed production and quality

Research seeked to evaluate the application of a mixture of fungicides throughout the different stages of crop development, as well as to experimentally evaluate the effects of different selection systems on the production and final quality of seed produced. Two bean cultivars (CALIMA and PVA 916), four selection systems (plants; pods, seeds, and plants + pods + seeds), and four application frequencies (no application, and 2,3, and 5 applications) were evaluated. The mixture consisted of the fungicides Benomil (0.55 g/II plus Mancozeb (3 g/l). The experimental phase was conducted during 1988 in the Darién-Calima region (1420 masl), located in the western mountain chain ("Cordillera Occidental") in the Department of the Cauca Valley, Colombia. The number of plants eliminated and plants harvested, total grain production, and pure seed yield were the parameters measured in the field for each plot. Manual seed selection and physiologic and health seed 18m were performed under laboratory conditions. Response to the effect of the different application frequencies was differential, showing an increase in total production, pure seed yield, and seed quality for the greatest number of applications. The critical point was close to 3 applications. The most outstanding selection systems were those that included seed selection. High yields of excellent quality seed were obtained when 2 or 3 fungicide applications were combined with the seed selection system. Establishment of some variable costs enable comparing the favorable effects of the different application frequencies in relation to benefits obtained in 1erms of seed production, quality, and cost for each treatment.
