Streptococcus agalactiae: up to date the only pathogenous Streptococcus of cultured tilapias in Colombia

Streptococcosis are a set of diseases with similar signs and pathological features involving different organs and caused by a group of Gram (+) cocci. The precise identification of each microorganism is not feasible only by the conventional microbiological methods, instead molecular biology techniques must be used. In Colombia, the first streptococcosis case in tilapias was diagnosed in 1999. The DNA sequencing of isolates from differents regions of the country demostrated an affinity of 98,8% with Streptococcus agalactiae. This study was intended to find out whether up to date the only Gram (+) cocci responsible for infection and /or disease in cultured tilapias in Colombia is S. agalactiae, or whether exist other genus or species. The study included microbiological, immunohistochemical (indirect immunoperoxidase) and PCR techniques for isolating and identification of bacteria from tissues of fish, water and mud obtained from cultured ponds, also were examined tilapias from markets and supermarkets. The techniques used are specific for isolating and identification of S. agalactiae. Our results permit us to suggest that up to date only S. agalactiae is responsible for the infection and /or disease in cultured tilapia in Colombia. We do not have evidence for other Streptococcus such S. iniae or other Gram (+) cocci causing disease in Colombia. Tilapia seems to be the main reservoir of S. agalactiae in the country and the transmission risk for the human being, although possible, is considerably low if appropriate measures are taken.
