HEMATOLOGICAL AND BIOCHEMICAL BLOOD PARAMETERS IN DAIRY AND BREEDING CATTLE IN PANAMA

In order to determine the ranges and variations of hematological values and blood chemistry in bovines of different purposes (meat-milk), and according to the physiological state, blood samples were collected in breeding and milking cows at the Calabacito Experimental Farm and the El Ejido Experimental Farm of the Agricultural Innovation Institute of Panama. Hematic and blood biochemical parameters were read with a blood chemistry analyzer Rx Monza (Randox). The results showed that the hematological and biochemical parameters, by physiological state, in breeding cows were similar (P>0,05), except for magnesium, where minor (P<0,05) serum levels were observed in heifers compared to pregnant cows, lactating and empty cows. While, in dairy cows there were differences (P<0,05) for hematocrit and hemoglobin variables, by physiological state, compared to those pregnant and empty cows. The analysis of variance for the variable’s hematocrit, hemoglobin, urea, platelets, glucose and inorganic phosphorus indicated significant differences (P<0,05) between breeding cows and dairy cows. With this study, it was possible to establish reference ranges for eight hematological and ten biochemical parameters in breeding cows and dairy cows in Panama.
