SEASONALITY OF CALVING IN BUFFALO (Bufalypso) UNDER LOW TROPICAL CONDITIONS IN PANAMA

Calving seasonality of buffalo (Bufalypso) was examined from interviewing buffalo breeders and reproductive diagnoses trough transrectal palpation and ultrasound. The population under the study comprised 16% of the producers engaged in the activity with a population that represented 23% of the total inventory. Data were analyzed using basic descriptive statistics with frequency distribution, determination of means and standard deviation. Results indicated the buffaloes show a seasonality of calving occurring mostly during the third quarter of the year (80,8%), whith 69,2% of them happening between August to September. Birth rate was 64,2%, and gestation rate was on average 76,3%, however, there were farms in which it reached 80 and 100%. During the period in which the information was examined, no mortality was reported in calves, in adults it was 2,2%; the abortion rate was 3,8%. Calving interval was estimated at 398,5 (± 55,86) days. It is concluded that buffaloes show a seasonality of calving from July to September, with pregnancy rate 70%.
