THE CORN RESPONSE TO THE APPLICATION OF PHOSPHORUS AND SULFUR IN THE REGION OF AZUERO, PANAMA. 1989-1992.

During the last four years, it has been realized in the Regional of Azuero in Panamá, 39 exploratory trials in corn, to observe the response to the phosphorus changing sources, methods of application and dose. Moreover, the response of the application of sulfur was evaluated. The experimental design used was of completed blocks at random with three repetitions. The treatments evaluated consisted of three sources of phosphorus (phosphoric rock, super phosphate triple and formula), two methods of application (strike and sow) and different dose of application of phosphorus. Other treatments were included to evaluate the effect of combining together the paster with the phosphorus in the same band and the response of the application of sulfur. The average gain in output calculated through the 11 experiments of the Cycle A, using 30, 60 and 90 kg P2O5/ha was of 0.52 ± 0.64, 0.79 ± 0.81 and 0.48 ± 0.55 T/ha, respectively. In Cycle B and C, the gains of the application of phosphorus were less than in the first cycle. Analysing the response of the P in the national trials (Figure 2), it was observed that the mayority is positive in all the levels evaluated, so this probes that the crop responds to the application of this element. The response to P using as sourse the RF was surpassed by the SFT in the first cycle of evaluation (Cycle A). In the Cycle B, it was observed that the tendency of the responses was the contrary, the RF surpasses of the SFT in the mayority of the localities. The application of the phosphorus together with the plaster in the same band was not significant in the Cycle A, in comparation with the application of both elements per separated. In the third cycle (Cycle C), it was observed the benefits of applying together the plaster and the phosphorus in the same band. It was found that the average gain of applyingt hem together was of 0.289 ± 0.346 T/ha. In general, the response to the application of S is of small magnitude but consistent (less than 0.5 T/ha), which was significan. In the three years (1989-1991), it was found positive response in 8 of the 11 localities. The 82.91 and 100% of the trials showed positive or physical responses in the output to the applications of 30, 60 and 90 kg/ha using as source the SFT, respectively, while the proportion of economical responses was 64, 73 and 37 to the same dose.
