YIELD CORN GRAIN IMPACT ON ACCOUNT OF NEW RECOMMENDATION IN FERTILIZATION AND PLANT POPULATION MANAGEMENT. AZUERO, PANAMA, 2001.

The current corn yields are risky for the continuity of corn activities in many Central America countries. Increasing the yields suggests the use of high potential cultivars and agronomy practices adapted to these; therefore, to guarantee the farmers stability in this activity. The most important restrictions in corn production are: low plant population, inefficiency in Notrogen use and shortage of some nutriments. During the last five years, the IDIAP Corn Project had carried out agronomic trials to design a new recommendation. In order to verify the yield impact of new recommendations, the Regional Test of Corn was analyzed from 1989 to 200. Through this period, 96 cultivars and 132 sites were evaluated. From 1989 to 1998 the agronomic recommendations for this experiment consisted in the sowing of 5.33 plants/m2, with the application of 227 kg complete fertilizer (N-P-K)/ha in planting moment, plus 227 kg of urea/ha in 30 days after planting (dap). The new recommendation implicated the increase of plant population to 6.25 plants/m2, the use of 20 to 30 kg of sulfur/ha, in the planting moment, and urea fragmentation (applications at 20 and 37 dap). During the 89-98 period the yield average was 4.56 t/ha with an amount of plant in the harvest moment of 4.75 plants/m2, ear weight of 101.3 g, 0.95 ear/plant and 16.7% of plant lodging. At the beginning of the new recommendations, the yield average increased in 1.58 t/ha, the plant number in 1.19. plant/m2, and 5.9 g in ear weight; the lodging decreased in 3.5%. The yield increase represented a Return Marginal Rate of 1002.7%.
