NATURAL CROSS PROTECTION INDUCED BY A SYMPTOMLESS STRAIN OF POTATO VIRUS X (PVX) AGAINST A SEVERE STRAIN OF THE SAME VIRUS IN POTATO
In the highlands of the central plateau of México virus diseases are a very important problem for the potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) crop. In some locations it has been observed that in the cultivar ?Sangema?, mosaic symptoms caused by PVX are very rare and a symptomless strain of the same virus is very common, sometimes estimated in 100%. The objective of this work was to determine if a natural cross protection occurs among the commercial varieties grown in that region. Cross-protection against a PVX isolate causing mosaic (AM) occurred under greenhouse and field conditions in ?Alpha?, Sangema and ?Norteña? cultivars. Plants of these genotypes were naturally infected for several generations with a symptomless strain of PVX. None of the plants inoculated with AM showed symptoms of mosaic. When the symptomless isolate of PVX (AA) was inoculated in these three cultivars, these were protected against the mosaic isolate (AM) under field conditions. Cross protection was incomplete in ?Ireri?, since some inoculated plants showed mosaic symptoms.
