DEVELOPMENT AND EVALUATION OF A KINEMATIC WAVE MODEL APPLIED TO BORDER IRRIGATION AND A COMPARISON WITH THE HYDROLOGIC MODEL

During the irrigation of crops, sometimes the water must be cut off before it reaches the end of the border, in order to improve efficiency of the application. The surface flow can be represented with the kinematic wave model, which consists of a simplification of Saint Venant equations. A computer program was designed which solves numerically the kinematic wave equation. The subsurface water flow was modeled by the Green and Ampt infiltration equation. The model was calibrated and evaluated by irrigation tests, which were carried out in a wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) field. As a result of the evaluation of the model an error mean square (EMS) of 1.24 minutes was obtained for the advancing phase and of 0.68 minutes for the receding phase. Comparing the hydrologic model with the field data, the EMS was 0.86 minutes for the kinematic wave model and 1.04 minutes for the hydrologic model.
