NITROGEN FOLIAR SUPPLY ON PHOTOSYNTHESIS AND DEVELOPMENT IN OFF-SEASON PEACH PRODUCTION
With the aim to evaluate the effect of urea and Dormex (a.i. 49 % hydrogen cyanamide) as nitrogen foliar nutrition treatments on photosynthesis and development in off-season production of peach (Prunus persica L. Batsch), single and double applications of 1 and 3 % urea and 0.25 % Dormex were tested on August 1992 on ?Flordamex 1? peach trees; the same trees were sprayed with 0.5 % Dormex + 2 % oil, and 2 % Dormex on September as budbreak promoters. The off-season budbreak was low on November 1992 and was imputed to a decrease in minimum temperatures in October. Dormex at 0.25 % as nutriment and 2 % as budbreak promoter, increased nitrogen foliar concentration. A single 0.25 % Dormex spray resulted in a faster flower bud differentiation; chlorophyll content (Cl) and CO2 exchange rate (Fa), before budbreak promoters applications, were increased. The Fa, transpiration (Tr) and stomatal conductance (Ce) of leaves growing after the natural period of dormancy were not increased by the foliar treatments. Cl and Fa correlated (r= 0.56**); as well as Ce and Tr (r=0.65*) and Ce and Fa (r=0.72*). Double 0.25 % Dormex application resulted in a rapid yellowing and leaves fall; this treatment had no favourable effect on Cl and Fa.
