DEVELOPMENT OF AGRICULTURAL TECHNOLOGY FOR DRYLAND MAIZE IN THE SERDAN, PUEBLA REGION

The objective of this study was to improve the technology for maize (Zea mays L.) production in the Llanos de Serdán region by optimizing the use of inputs, increasing the income and minimizing the farmer ?s economic losses. To achieve this purpose, the information generated by 84 productivity experiments was analized. Results indIcated that nitrogen had the greatest influence on crop yields in the edaphoclimatic units (EU) of Serdán, Coyotepec and Tlachichuca. For the EU of Gpe. Victoria the most significant technological components were: sources of nitrogen and phosphorus, planting date, and fertilizer application opportunity and fraction. The marginal economic analysis indicated that under the present risk conditions, crop management, production costs and grain and stover prices, the corn crop is profitable only in the EU of Serdán and Tlachichuca.
