Oil palm breeding program of PalmElit and its partners in Ecuador and Colombia
The bud rot complex has significantly affected oil palm plantations in Latin America. PalmElit and its partners in Ecuador and Colombia have undertaken a series of trials in order to obtain high yielding material resistant to the disease. This report presents the results obtained to date and the procedures used during the process, to conclude that, at least in the short-term, the solution is to plant interspecific hybrids and E. guineensis material whose resistance is beginning to show. However, it is imperative to continue research to find other sources of resistance.
