Pilot Trial for the Management of Bub Rot at El Palmar de la Vizcaína Research Centre : a tool for technology adoption and transfer

Pilot trials are the scenario where research results produced by Cenipalma researchers are validated at semi-commercial scale in order to determine their technical and economic feasibility, and are used also as a tool to promote the comprehensive adoption of the criteria and best practices established by Cenipalma to help improve the technical capacity of oil palm growers and plantations. This article presents the technical and economic results of the pilot trial conducted at the El Palmar de La Vizcaína Research Center for the management of bud rot (PC) in established plantations. The monthly incidence of bud rot-affected palms, the severity of the disease and the cost of managing the disease for an incidence of 5% to 10% were assessed during one year of follow-up. This pilot trial showed that by implementing Cenipalma's technology package it is possible to mitigate the disease, keeping it within an acceptable technical (incidence less than 5%) and economic (management investment $370,000 pesos/ha/ year) threshold. Additionally, it served as a training platform and tool for 288 oil palm companies representing over 80% of the area planted to oil palm in the Central Zone and thus contributed to the transfer and adoption of technology.
