Oil Palm Agroindustry 2019 Production Costs: a Benchmarking Study among Companies that Have Adopted Good Practices

This paper presents the results of a benchmarking study oriented towards estimating the 2019 production costs of Colombian oil palm producing companies. Participating in this study depended upon the will of the managers of the companies. It must be highlighted that the data is gathered at companies that are recognized for implementing good agricultural practices and good practices at their mills. The latter means that these results are a reference for growers and mill managers that are willing to improve their productive performance and the profitability of their businesses. In 2019, this study accounted for 29 oil palm plantations and 18 oil extraction mills, which correspond to 64.170 ha of crops out of 559.582 ha nationwide, this is 12% of the total area planted in Colombia with oil palm. Results indicate that unit costs for the group of companies evaluated in 2019 were COP 280.894 per metric ton of fresh fruit bunches (FFB) and COP 1.419.477 per metric ton of crude palm oil (CPO) for E. guineensis, while for OxG hybrids the study yielded unit costs of COP 293.450 per metric ton of FFB and COP 1.495.839 per metric ton of CPO. It was concluded that improving oil palm crop yields, expressed in terms of metric tons of FFB per hectare, requires greater investment of financial resources. However, the consequence is a lower unit cost which in turn implies greater profitability of the oil palm business.
