Long-term tests with palm biodiesel in a fleet of transportation trucks

A long-term test (100,000 km/truck) was carried out in order to evaluate the performance of blends of diesel and palm biodiesel (B5, B10, B20) in nine Chevrolet NKR III vehicles that are part of the Coordinadora Mercantil fleet and supplied by General Motors Colmotores. These vehicles represent about 60% of the total Colombian fleet in the light truck segment. Trucks operated under real operating conditions in intercity and urban routes in Bogotá (up to 2,600 meters above sea level) for more than 900,000 km. The results showed that the performance and fuel consumption of the vehicles using the biodiesel blends (B10 and B20) were very similar to those of the vehicles using the biodiesel blends (B5, control vehicles). In addition, palm oil biodiesel blends showed environmental benefits such as reduction on opacity index, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbon and particulate matter emissions. Mechanical inspections of the injection systems of the vehicles showed that the use of fuel blends of diesel-palm biodiesel did not influence the wear and tear of the pieces found on the injection pumps.
