Analysis of the socio-economic and environmental feasibility of the potato-milk production system in the sub-watershed of the Illangama- River Ecuador

According to the Index of Unsatisfied Basic Needs (UBN), in the Illangama River sub-watershed, around 76% of the population is poor, with incomes ranging from US$120 to 160 per month, in spite of having adopted complex farming systems with high production potential. The most important of these is the potato-milk system which provides the highest proportion of family income and ensures food security. From this viewpoint, a feasibility analysis of social, economic, and environmental issues was conducted to establish its efficiency and flexibility under new conditions. The analysis is based on information gathered from sources representing different levels and scales, through field studies, experimental research, and observations of producer plots. The findings show that this system has the highest productivity potential in the area and is feasible to adopt because it increases production and incomes. It represents the best choice since the producers already have the necessary productive assets and family labor, which allow sustainability. From an environmental point of view, if the system is operated properly with the implementation of alternative environment-friendly technologies, it could stop the advance of the agricultural frontier into wasteland areas. This system is an option that local governments should promote to preserve the ecosystem of the highlands.
