PF 01. Evaluation of leucaena ecotypes (Leucaena leucocephala) under grazing

Thirteen Leucaena ecotypes were studied on the Universidad de los Andes farm in El Vigía, Mèrida,Venezuela at elevation of 65 m above sea level during 1994 and 1995, in a random block design with three replications. Treatments were the following: CIAT-7385, 7984, 7985, 9377, 17217, 17218, 17219, 17222, 17223, 17474, 17492,17501 and 17502. Plot size was 120 m2, sampling were made on six plants of each plot before and after grazing (45 days). Ecotypes CIAT-17474 and 7385 with 16.02 and 13.9 t DM/ha.year were in the top of the list ;significant lower yields were estimated for CIAT-17502,17222 and 7984 with less than 8.3 t DM /ha.year. Residual forage was 3.79 tn DM/ha year and was not affected by treatments. Average forage intake was 7.02 t DM/ha year and significant differences among ecotypes were found CIAT-17474 was the highest in intake (12.8 tn DM/ha year).Plant height average was 2.24 m. Number of branches and stem diameter were not different for ecotypes. Leucaena under grazing showed high forage yields and intake. Ecotypes CIAT-17474, 7385, 17219, 17223 and 9366 were higher in forage intake.
