NR 35. Degradation parameters and ruminal digestion kinetics of the industrial residue of three varieties of passion fruit (Passiflora spp.)

The compositions and ruminal degradabilities of dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and the rates of ruminal digesta passage of industrial residues of three passion fruit varieties, yellow (Passiflora edulis f. flavicarpa Deneger), purple (Passiflora edulis Sims) and sweet (Passiflora alata) were studied. A completely randomized design was used to study the chemical compositions and the degradations and rate of passage in 4 rumen fistulated 7/8 Holstein x Zebu steers in a latin square design. Differences were found (P<.05) between varieties in the contents of DM, CP, phosphorus and gross energy but the contents of NDF, acid detergent fiber and calcium were similar (P>.05). The potential DM degradabilities differed (P<.05) between animals and incubation time and there was an interaction between incubation time and varieties. For CP degradability no differences between animal, incubation time and varieties were found (P>.05).The rate of ruminal digesta passage was 4.8 %/h. The effective degradabilities of CP and NDF were low for the sweet variety and high for the mixture of varieties yellow and purple.
