The Trinidad and Tobago dollar is to be floated against the US dollar in an announcement made by Wendell Mottley, Minister of Finance. Correspondent Tony Fraser reports on the financial situation to Debbie Ransome. Cuba in the past, the world’s largest sugar supplier has started buying back its own sugar from trading houses and postponed some of its contracts with trade houses form 1993 -1994, in order to meet export commitments due to poor harvests. The Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) says that the Caribbean ranks at the top for deaths by fire, traffic and other accidents - correspondent Sandra Baptiste reports from an interview by Trinidadian PAHO coordinator - Dr. Karen Sealy who states that many of these accidents are preventable and regional government need to pass the relevant supportive legislation. Former West Indian Vice Captain – Trinidadian Gus Logie signed a one year contract with a prospect club in Adelaide, Australia. The contract will allow him to pursue business management studies. In an interview with correspondent Mike Jarvis he is reflective about his test cricket career and states that his decision to retire from international cricket was a result of a series of personal setbacks that left him in a state of emotional despair, and he decided to make a conscious decision to use the period to spend with family and pursue other endeavours that have been on the back burner for a long time. Fears of military action have surfaced in Suriname after military leaders walked out of a meeting of the appointment of a government chosen new army military chief. A Surinamese Human Rights activist believes the country’s military does not have the rank and file backing necessary to stage a coup – Stanley Wrench, Director of Human Rights Organisation in an interview with correspondent explains why he believes that a coup will not come to fruition.
