Germination and early growth characteristics in the rice variety Conarroz3 (Oryza sativa) exposed to pre-sowing seed treatments under greenhouse conditions.

Pests and pathogen are a major problem for farmers and result in the reduction of crop yields and the overall quality of agricultural production and consequently directly affect food security. Seed treatment is an important technique in crop protection and has improved crop yields by providing protection from pre- and post-emergence insects and disease. The aim of this experiment was to study the efficacy of biological and chemical treatments and their combination with bio stimulants on germination and early growth characteristics of a new rice variety, Connarroz3. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse at the Academic Farm, EARTH University, Guácimo, Costa Rica. Germination tests were conducted for 40 pre-germination seed treatments. Results showed a slight variation in germination parameters, where all treated seeds increased in germination (%), germination index, germination energy (%) and seed vigor index in comparison with an untreated control. Chemical treatment outperformed biological and bio stimulants in germination %, germination index, and seed vigor index with a mean of 86.25 % ± 7.86, 62.15 ± 4.29 and 1164.85 ± 95.93, respectively. Biological treatments recorded the highest germination energy (%), however, there were no significant differences between some chemical and bio stimulant treatments. Seed treatments enhanced root and shoot elongation and seedling dry mass compared to the untreated control. Chemical treatments were the best in root elongation but shoot length demonstrated no significant difference between treatments. For seedling dry mass, bio stimulant treatments outperformed biological and chemical treatments. For tillering, variation was observed between treatments, where all treated seeds increased tillering index in comparison with an untreated control. Chemical treatments recorded the highest tillering index and were statistically different from biological and bio stimulant treatments. The results of this study demonstrates that pre-sowing seed treatment enhanced seed germination, root length and tillering index in the new rice variety Conarroz3, supporting the use of this technique in order to increase rice production in Costa Rica.
