Analysis of the ugandan bamboo industry and its potential to supply international corporate companies.

Bamboo is an emerging raw material with great opportunities for suppliers around the world. As awareness of bamboo grows around the world, the demand for bamboo products also increases. The objective of this study is to assess the Ugandan bamboo industry´s potential to supply international corporate companies. The report includes an overview of the status quo of the Bamboo enterprises in Uganda, a documentation of the existing bamboo resources and corporate market requirements for suppliers as well as the level of fulfilment of these requirements by bamboo enterprises in Uganda. Additionally, the report presents the identified strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats from a SWOT analysis and makes recommendations for the Ugandan bamboo sector that are based on the findings. It also includes an indication of the experience and interest of corporate companies in utilizing bamboo products. Both primary data (collected through questionnaires) and secondary data (collected through document review and analysis) were qualitative and quantitative in nature. The study area was Uganda. Bamboo enterprises were accessed through the Uganda Bamboo Association and 137 members were interviewed and 82 Bamboo enterprises (59.9 %) of the bamboo enterprises interviewed are registered, 92 % have bank accounts etc. In conclusion, the Ugandan bamboo industry is young. But, formally, a good number of Ugandan bamboo enterprises could become corporate suppliers. Strengths and opportunities clearly outweigh potential threats, In order to exploit those strengths and opportunities internal weaknesses need to be addressed.
