Hypochaerin, C15H20O3.H2O

Preliminary information. Hypochaerin was isolated from Hypochaeris setosus Wedd and an ethanolic extract, previously treated in the usual manner (González et al., 1974), was chromatographed on silica gel and eluted with a benzene-ethyl acetate mixture to yield crystalline hypochaerin, m.p. 110-112º, [a]B0-64º (c 4.1 chloroform). Elemental analysis and mass spectrometry indicated the molecular formula given in the title. In a previous paper (González et al., 1976) we established the structure of hypochaerin as 3-oxo-4B,5a,6B,7a 11B-H-guai-1(2)-en-6,12-olide, epimeric at C(10) to the ketolactone (1) (Barton et al., 1962). In order to confirm the partial stereochemistry earlier determined by chemical means and to prove that the methyl configuration at C(10) is a, the following X-ray analysis was perfomed.
