Phytosociological inventory and assessment of species composition in the fiend zones in an oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) plantation of West Sumatra.

A phytosociological study on the flora associated with oil palm has been carried out in an oil palm plantation in West Sumatra. A total of 298 plant species were identified, 186 dicotyledoneae, 77 monocotyledoneae and 35 ferns, representing 81 families. The species richest families were Poaceae, Cyperaceae, Asteraceae, Rubiaceae and Euphorbiaceae. To study the plant distribution, 100 relevés (sampling sites) were sampled. Of the 224 species recorded 8 species occurred with high constancy (in80 per cent of the relevés), whereas 172 species remained rare (in 20 per cent of the relevés). Species composition varied within the research area, where soil type was one factor influencing species constancy, abundance and coverage. Species abundance per relevé was significantly higher on fluvisol than on histosol, while the difference in the total number of species between the soil types was small. Species found exclusively on fluvisol were Selaginella plana Hieron. and Vitis japonica Thunb., whereas solely on histosol Momordica charantia L and Trema orientalis (L) Blume occurred. The harvesting path, palm circle and inter-row represent specific microhabitats hosting alternative species compositions. Species mainly found in the inter-row were: Diplazium esculentum (Retz.) Sw., Cyclosorus interruptus (Willd.) HIto, Nephrolepis biserrata (Sw.) Schott and Christella dentata (Forsk.) Brownsey Jermy. Primarily found in the other zones were herb species such as Hedyotis corymbosa (L.) Lamk., Limnophila rugosa (Roth.) Merr., Borreria setidens (Miq.) Bold. andPeperomia pellucida (L.) H B K, the sedges Fimbristylis miliacea (L.) Tilhl and Cyperus kyllingia engdl. as well as the grass, Sporobolus diander Beauv.. The eight most frequent species were identified as an abstract plant community: Mikania micrantha H B K, Pouzolzia zeylanica Benn., Ageratum conyzoides L, Sporobolus diander, Nephrolepis biserrata, Pityrograrnma calomelanos (L.), Lygodium microphyllum (Cav.) R.Br. and Stenochlaena palustris (Burm.) Bedd.
