Goals of genetic engineering in the oilseed sector.

The main goals in the genetic improvement of oil plants such as oilseed rape, sunflowers and soya are outlined, including quality improvement of oil and oilcake, and resistance to herbicides, insects and diseases. The use of genetic transformation combined with classical breeding techniques allows faster development of new varieties and rapid selection. Selection and hybridization schemes are diagrammatically presented for rape.
