Progeny testing of Coffea canephora hybrid clones in Papua New Guinea

Six free pollinated Robusta clones were tested against three Robusta controls under PNG lowlands condition at Omuru Research Station at 400 m asl and 4° South of the equator. The free pollinated Robusta clones showed high vigour over most of the parent used in the trial. Two free pollinated progenies PNI 182 and PNI 181 were comparable in their vegetative growth measurements. PNI 182's performance was equivalent to the control PNI 191 and produced 1.74 t gb/ha annually. PNI 182 VAN 149 is the free pollinated progeny of PNI 191 VAN 149. The parents of PNI 182 and PNI 181 were recommended for inclusion in a polyclonal Robusta seed garden while cuttings from these two clones will be supplied to interested farmers. The trial showed that 11.8% of the total crop is harvested between October and January, 43.4% between February and May and 44.8% during June and September.
