Colombia, La Cabaña. Report on the visit from 6th to 13th April 2003

Installation of the Girardot E. guineensis seed garden is proceeding normally, and the first plantings are scheduled for 2004. The material for the second shipment has been chosen and will be dispatched in August 2003. The backcross programme is proceeding satisfactorily and the first pollinations have been carried out. Pollen harvesting from the chosen parents will make it possible to start pollen exchanges with the African partners, for backcross 2 work in Africa. The standards for F1 hybrid seed production are well respected, enabling us to guarantee seed quality. Production estimates are around 3 million dry seeds and the first germination results are encouraging. Average yields in the hybrid trial for the first harvesting year are 105 kg per palm, which is a very good result.
