Colombia, Indupalma. Report on the mission, 6-13/04/2003

This mission was carried out under a research agreement to produce improved oil palm planting material displaying bud rot tolerance. All the backcross 1 vegetative observations have been reviewed and the observation programmes for oil quality has been indicated. The yield data obtained for the hybrids indicate the major potential of this material and its merits for continuing the programme to introgress Elaeis oleifera traits in Elaeis guineensis. The artificial pollination and seed germination techniques described in the general instructions available at Indupalma must be respected for both F1 hybrid seed production and for the future backcross 2 mating design, which will be specified in detail once the parents have been chosen.
