Annual report 1998-1999: cotton improvement and seed multiplication

The breeding programme had, in order of priority, the following objedives: 1. Creation of a hairy variety that tolerates jassids, for the mid term; 2. Creation of varieties adapted to crop mechanization (earliness, grouped opening, fixed growth, with supplementary studies conducted on the compatibility between hairiness and mechanized harvesting and the use of defoliants) and resistant to blue disease, jassids and American bollworm (hairiness, high gossypol, transgenes) for the long term; 3. Selection of a hairy, colored-fiber variety, for the short term. The main results of this crop year are summarized in the following paragraphs: In the international SEACRC varie1y trial, in Thailand, Dora I I has very good earliness and productivity. VN 3 5 from Vietnam is the most complete for all characteristics analyzed. In Vietnam, Dora 11 and Vn 40 are the most interesting varieties. The genealogical selection for productiy4 and mechanization presents good level for leaf hairiness, ginning out turn, plant productivity and fiber characteristics. The genealogical selection for tolerance to - jassids was improved for fiber characteristics in relation with the results of last year. Leaf hairiness is good. Some lines from the crosses Dora 11 * C 118 and Dora 11 * Bioseed 7 have very good leaf hairiness and fiber characteristics
