International Maize Testing Program: 1996 final report

The 1996 final report of the international maize testing program covers trials sent to cooperators in 1996 and for which data were received by September 1, 1998. It also includes trial results from 1995 for which data arrived too late to be included in earlier reports. In 1996, the international testing program distributed two types of standard trials: Experimental Variety Trials (EVTs) and CIMMYT Hybrid Trials (CHTs). These are described briefly in Table 1.1. The trials were distributed to national programs upon request as a product of CIMMYT's ongoing germplasm improvement work. Appendix A provides general description of the Center's maize breeding methodology and its relationship to the trials available from the Maize Program. Agroclimatic information, when available, along with agronomic data, has been included in the summary tables for each location. Information on elevation, date planted and harvested, weather, soil properties, and agronomic operations should allow for a meaningful interpretation of trial results. This information is presented in English, with Spanish translations provided in Appendix C under the heading "Abbreviations Used in the Summary Tables." This report is the end product of carefully conducted trials and the timely return of complete and accurate data by hundreds of trial cooperators whose participation is extremely valuable in the development of superior germplasm for developing country maize farmers. The CIMMYT Maize Program would like to thank the scientists who participated in the international testing program for their time and effort, and we hope that this information will prove useful to them and others interested in maize research.
