Extraction of marine phenolics using compressed fluids

The marine environment is considered an inexhaustible source of antioxidants. Marine organisms like macro- and microalgae and sponges are excellent sources of phenolic compounds that attract researchers and consumers’ interest. These marine organisms present a complex chemical and nutritional composition, where phenolic compounds are found at much lower concentrations than macronutrients. Therefore, specific extraction strategies should be applied to obtain rich phenolic extracts to establish their chemical composition and biological functionality and develop commercial products. Nowadays, there is a clear trend to apply efficient and green extraction techniques for recovering natural ingredients, like phenolic compounds. One of the most useful and successful strategies is the use of compressed fluids extraction techniques such as supercritical fluid extraction (SFE), gas expanded liquid extraction (GXL), and pressurized liquid extraction (PLE). This chapter describes and discusses the fundamentals of these alternative green techniques and their applications to extract phenolic compounds from marine sources.
